All families with a child enrolled in District 196 recently received an email from the district with a link to the 2025-26 Overview of Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook. 

The handbook includes information about student rights, responsibilities and disciplinary responses for different types of behavior. Updated annually, this year’s revisions include updates to the sections on student interviews with outside agencies, corporal punishment and physical restraint, student cell phone use, and student discipline. The handbook also includes two new sections on student health and language access.  The 2025-26 handbook can be found at www.district196.org/about/overview-of-student-rights-and-responsibilities.

The Overview of Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook is reviewed and updated annually. It was approved by the School Board on June 9 .

The handbook is posted in three languages, and a number of paper copies are available at each school upon request by district families. Schools review the handbook with all students in the fall.
