Back-to-School Checklist

First Days of School Schedule for Wednesday and Thursday, August 28 and 29

The purpose of these days is to welcome students back to Eastview High School, create classroom connections, introduce course information and establish Eastview expectations.

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 28.

On Wednesday, August 30, 9th grade students will attend school all day, from 7:40am-2:30pm. All students will attend from 11:00am-2:30pm (10-12th grade students will begin their day at 11:00am).
On Thursday, August 31, all students will attend school for a normal school day from 7:40am-2:30pm.
Bus transportation will be available for both start times on Wednesday (7:40am and 11:00am). For 10-12 grade students the bus will pick up 3.5 hours after the normal pick up times (for example, for a 7:07am pickup time the bus will pick up at 10:37am.
There are no classes for Friday, September 1, and Monday, September 4 with students returning on Tuesday, September 5.

Career Development Students

Students enrolled in Career Development courses will attend classes at EVHS during August 31 and September 1 and begin attending their Career Development classes at their specific locations on Tuesday, September 5.

Monday, August 28 will be orientation for all 9th grade and students new to Eastview High School.

Orientation begins at 6:30pm in the Main Gymnasium.
Students will receive their schedules, locker information and meet their teachers.
There will be an opportunity to learn about each of the co-curricular activities available at Eastview.

Open House-for Parents and Guardians is Monday, September 9

Open House is an opportunity to meet the teachers of your student(s) and learn more about the learning opportunities available at Eastview High School. The evening will begin at 6:30pm and will follow your student's class schedule. Parents and guardians will meet in your student's 1st period classroom at 6:30pm.

Student Academic Success and Attendance

Our district and school districts across the country are looking at the relationship between chronic absenteeism and student academic success. We know that attendance and engagement in school are important factors in a student's learning and social/emotional development. Students who are absent from school miss out on the valuable learning activities that take place in the classroom, both with the teacher and with peers. Even strong students with good grades can fall off course in school if they miss too many classes; lessons build on one another and move more quickly in the upper grades. While students may complete some or even all of the work missed, the learning experience is significantly altered. When students miss a class, it is difficult to simulate the missed teacher instruction, peer discussions and classroom experiences.

Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing more than 10% of the school year (excused or unexcused). At Eastview High School, that is five days or more per quarter. For comparison, most EVHS students miss fewer than three days per quarter and 86% of our students at Eastview stay under the 10% threshold annually.

Some absences are unavoidable and we understand there are circumstances that prevent a student from attending. However, we expect those absences to be limited. We care greatly about the health and well-being of each of our students. We want to partner with students and families when challenges exist and work together to support your student in any way we can. We always strive to maximize learning by keeping students in the classroom and reducing absences.

Please contact us if there are extenuating circumstances of which we are unaware or if you need support or resources in getting your student to school on a consistent basis.

Attendance Protocol: Our Support Plan for Absences

In order to support students and families, the following is our attendance protocol for the 2021-22 school year.

Upon five (5) absences from any single class period, students/families will receive an awareness letter indicating that the student is considered chronically absent and close monitoring will take place.

Upon ten (10) absences from any single class period, students/families will be required to provide a doctor’s note to excuse any future absences. Without a doctor’s note, absences will be marked unexcused.

Upon fifteen (15) absences from any single class period, students will receive an NC (no credit) mark on their report card for that class if a passing grade is earned (students not earning a passing grade will receive a grade of F). No credit will be earned at that time. Credit may be earned with successful completion of one of the following:

1. Approval of an Attendance Appeal

Attendance appeals will be reviewed by an attendance appeal committee which will include a Counselor, Grade Level Administrator, Nurse and Case Manager (if applicable).

2. Successful completion of an Attendance Improvement Contract

Student must be present for 90% of class periods the following quarter (this is equal to fewer than five absences from each class in the nine-week term).

If neither of the above are approved/met, the following options may be available; students must work with their counselor and/or grade level administrator to plan for and register for either option.

3. CORE (required) classes – successful completion of Credit Recovery for the required course

Credits may be recovered in either Extended Day (after school) or Summer School; the original NC will remain on the student’s transcript, but the recovered credit will also be listed (with a grade of P for pass) and count toward graduation requirements.

4. ELECTIVE (non-required) classes – registration and successful completion of the course in subsequent year

This is based on availability – students new to the course will have priority in registration if the course is full; the original NC will remain on the student’s transcript, but the recovered credit will also be listed (with the letter grade earned).

Student Responsibilities When Absent

Check provided resources (Schoology, course calendar, notes, etc.)
Collaborate with peers to obtain additional information, notes, homework, timelines, etc.
If further clarification is needed, prepare questions for the teacher.
Meet/email with teacher(s) as needed to obtain clarification and/or plan for make-up assessments.
If after school make-up is necessary, communicate with coaches/advisors about potentially missing co-curricular commitments.
Reminder: In order to participate in co-curricular activities, students must be present four or more periods during the school day; communicate with coaches/advisors if you are unable to participate.

Educational Benefits

All District 196 students will receive free meals throughout the 2021-22 school year because of special funding from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. However, all families are still encouraged to apply for the Educational Benefits Program (formerly known as the Free and Reduced-Price Meals Program) for the upcoming school year.

All families are encouraged to apply for the Educational Benefits Program. This is more than just an application. This directly supports Eastview High School with compensatory aid, which is determined by how many families apply. This critical funding supports students and families with reduced fees for cocurricular activities, Behind the Wheel, AP testing, etc. Additionally, these benefits provide Eastview with additional teachers, additional instructional materials, math and reading support, and additional paraprofessionals and social workers. School Meals

There is no charge for free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch. A second full breakfast or lunch for a student is the same price as an adult breakfast and lunch. Only individual meal pricing is listed for an adult breakfast and lunch (weekly, monthly and yearly pricing is not available). Milk is included with all meals, but for additional cartons of milk or if purchased separately, it is an Ala Carte charge of 40 cents each for all eligibility levels.

Parking Permit Information

Parking permits are optional. There is free parking available for students in the lot near our tennis courts south of EVHS.

ISD 196 Policy
District Administration has determined that a parking fee will be charged for each parking permit issued to students in ISD 196 high schools. The cost will be $240 per year / $120 per semester.

Eastview High School
A limited number of parking permits are available to students who drive to school. Students who drive to school, have registered their vehicle, and have their purchased Eastview Parking Permit hanging on their rearview mirror may park in one of the two student parking lots on the west side of the building. There is no street parking on Flagstaff, 140th Street or Johnny Cake Ridge Road. There is no parking in the bus corral or the North parking lot, which is reserved for faculty and staff.

Semester Parking Permits:
Eastview High School issues permits twice per year: in August for Semester One and in January for Semester two; the parking fee for 2024-2025 is $120 per semester.

11th and 12th Grade Students: Fall permits are available on EduTrak Connect beginning the week of July 29th (for Fall permits) and beginning January 6th (Spring Permits).
10th, 11th and 12th Grade Students: Fall permits are available beginning August 12th (Fall) and January 13th (Spring).

Payment of $120 must be submitted along with the online application. Any/all outstanding fees/fines including parking tickets must be paid in full in order to receive a parking permit; fees/fines may be paid online or in person at the Eastview High School Main Office.

Fall permits may be picked up in the EVHS Learning Commons on Thursday, August 22nd and Monday, August 26th from 12:30pm-2:00pm.
Spring permits may be picked up in the Student Commons during lunch on Wednesday and Thursday, January 15th and 16th.

PSEO Parking Permits
Students taking three or more PSEO courses during the school day may be able to purchase a parking permit at a discounted rate. Contact Mr. Habeck in student services for more information.

Daily Parking Permits:
Daily permits may be purchased before school from the EVHS Attendance Office for $5.00 per day.

Parking Violations:
All cars parked on EVHS property must visibly display an EVHS parking permit during school hours. Violations will result in a $20 fine and/or towing at the owner’s expense. Students parking illegally (in the north parking lot, in the bus corral, in reserved/visitor/handicapped spaces, in unauthorized areas, blocking lanes, etc.) may be fined $20, have their parking permit revoked, and/or be subject to towing at the owner’s expense. Students found with a forged parking pass could be charged with theft and other appropriate consequences.

Lost or Stolen Permits

Lost or stolen parking permits will not be replaced. Students should see Mr. Habeck in Student Services to purchase a replacement.

School Supply List

Each classroom teacher will have different, though limited supply expectations. Simple notebooks, pens and pencils are the general expectation the initial beginning of school. Please see the following specifics and recommendations. See your teacher or counselor if there are financial challenges.

Recommended Calculators for Mathematics: Intermediate Algebra and Geometry: A scientific calculator is needed for courses in Intermediate Algebra and Geometry. We recommend the TI-30X or TI-30X II (solar) or the TI-34 MV. We do not recommend the TI-30Xa. Algebra-2, CAPS, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and AP Statistics: A graphing calculator is necessary for courses Algebra-2, CAPS, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics. A graphing calculator is necessary for courses Algebra-2, CAPS, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics. Texas Instruments makes several user friendly calculators. Because the TI-83 and TI-84 series calculators are used for classroom demonstrations and discussion, the Eastview Math Department strongly recommends these models to students. Due to lack of ease in use or missing applications, we do NOT recommend the TI-85 or TI-86. The TI-89, TI-92 and TI-Nspire CAS are not allowed on tests and college entrance exams and therefore are discouraged. The TI-89 is not allowed on the ACT Exam. Cell phone/iPad calculators are not allowed on any assessments. If you have questions regarding calculators please contact Travis Lee (Math Department Leader) at travis.lee@districtc196.org

Below is a compilation of the supply suggestions from 9th grade teachers. An EVHS Planner may be purchased at 9th Grade and New Student Orientation. Additional items are recommended: • Highlighters or colored pencils • Pens/pencils with erasers • Notebooks and folders • 100 3x5 cards • 3 ring binder (2 inch)& dividers with pockets • Scientific calculator (ti-30) or better calculator (if in Algebra 2 or above)

School Safety and Security

Safety and security of our students is important. In a continued effort to enhance student and facility security the West-Lower/Main Entrance (door #1) is the single point of entry while school is in session (between 7:40am – 2:30pm). Individuals may use both the West and North (door #8) entrance before school until 7:40am. Visitor parking will also be available in the West/Main Parking Lot for convenient parent access.

Site Council Information

The Eastview High School Parent Site Council provides a focus group forum where parents and school personnel meet to:

• Inform team members about the management and structure of the school.
• Create a forum for sharing positive school experiences and issues of concern.
• Empower team members to research areas, provide input and facilitate improvement.
• Encourage involvement in determining and supporting the future of the school and school district (through additional work on ad hoc Action Teams).

The Site Council is one of many formal and informational leadership teams which provides guidance for
EVHS. Our meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. and we will look to conclude our work by 8:00 p.m. each evening.
