HYPE
HYPE: Honors - Your Prep Experience
Welcome to the Eastview High School Honors Program! As a student registered for Honors English 9 and Honors American Citizenship & Government, you are invited to participate in a summer prep program aimed at easing the transition to high school and previewing/preparing for the rigor of the EVHS Honors Program. This academic camp will be led by Mr. Bob Dettmer (current Honors English 9 teacher and 20+ year veteran in the EVHS English department). Other EVHS Honors/AP teachers and students will be engaged throughout the week, as will a variety of faculty members (counselors, administrators, etc.).
We will be offering two sessions this summer, in an effort to provide multiple opportunities and to meet the needs of your busy summer schedules. The sessions are the same, so students need only to register for one of the two weeks.
Session I: July 15 – July 19 {12:00pm - 3:30pm}
Session II: August 5 – August 9 {8:30am – 12:00pm}
Participation in this camp is intended to give students an opportunity to launch their honors academic career with skills necessary to achieve. Elective credit will be offered for those interested (completion of an academic portfolio based on the work of the week will be required for credit). The registration fee is $100 for the week; financial aid is available upon request. Please click the link below to register and/or email Jodi Hanson (Jodi.Hanson@district196.org) with questions.

AP BIOLOGY SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS
DO NOTHING UNTIL JULY 1, 2024- THEN READ 20 MINUTES/DAY
There is considerable breadth and depth in the AP Biology course, yet our course time (early September to early May) is relatively condensed. Therefore, I strongly suggest completing the following work over the summer prior to our first day of AP Biology next year.
Click here for the full AP Bio Summer Assignment
The AP Biology exam is based on four key concepts:
- Big Idea 1: Evolution
- The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
- Big Idea 2: Energetics
- Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.
- Big Idea 3: Information Storage and Transmission
- Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes.
- Big Idea 4: Systems Interactions
- Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.
The AP Biology is very similar to the ACT in that it is a measure of concept understanding and the synthesis of information. I strongly suggest completing the following work over the summer prior to the first day of AP Biology next year.
AP BIOLOGY TEXT: AP Edition Campbell Biology; 12th Edition.
SCHOOLOGY: You will be invited to an AP Bio Summer Group on Schoology. Active Reading guides, and other resources are located on this page. I strongly recommend that you use these items to gain comprehension over the summer.
There will be an assessment on assigned work during the first week of school. The test is a measure of your basic understanding of the summer reading to guide the first term curriculum. Full comprehension of all principles is not necessary or required. Do not try and memorize material, rather get a basic understanding of the chapter concepts listed at the start of each chapter.
Information from College Board
There is a wealth of information from the College Board about the AP Biology Exam at the following website:
http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/sub_bio.html?biology
Success in any endeavor you choose to pursue, whether it is academics, athletics, arts, basically life is not accomplished in nine months. In everything you strive to do well, you must commit and make that goal part of your lifestyle, not a hobby to pick up on occasion when you are bored. You are not being asked to devote every moment of your summer to AP Biology; rather commit to a schedule that allows you to be prepared for the start of class in the fall, honor other responsibilities, and enjoy the relaxation of summer.

AP Calculus AB
AP Calculus AB
Summer Packet
This packet is intended to prepare you for AP Calculus AB by reviewing prerequisite algebra and pre-calculus skills and covering the first chapter calculus textbook. (With the amount of curriculum to be covered before the AP Exam in May, we need to cover this review chapter over the summer.)
It is due on the first day of school. There will be a Summer Packet quiz covering this review content at the end of the first week of school.
The packet is lengthy, so please start early! While many of the exercises cover basic algebra skills, you will encounter a few tough exercises. Embedded in this packet are short videos to guide you if you get stuck. If you need further assistance, please email me and we can schedule a meeting in-person or via Zoom. (cory.fusco@district196.org)
Have a wonderful and relaxing summer! I am looking forward to delving into the study and exploration of a branch of mathematics which has been referred to as “one of the supreme accomplishments of the human intellect.”
Calculus truly is a fascinating course—you will love it!

AP US History/Honors Am Lit
Hello future students AP US History students. We do not have a specific summer assignment for AP US History. Even though we do not have a specific summer assignment, we would like you to read this summer. Read anything you enjoy and come to school in the fall in the habit of reading regularly.
If you’re looking for ways to get started on US History this summer, we suggest selecting a book from the local library on a topic that seems interesting, viewing a documentary or a movie on a historical topic, or engaging more in current events through quality news sources.
We wish you a fun and safe summer and look forward to starting our class together in the fall.
Feel free to reach out to me via email this summer at Todd.Hering@District196.org.
Wishing you a safe and healthy summer,
Mr. Hering-AP US History Teacher
Honors English 9/AP World 9
Students entering Honors English 9 and AP World 9 are asked to choose a book from a list that we have created. Once chosen, students have two responsibilities. One, they need to mark up the text every five pages with their thinking, and two, they need to select five excerpts from the book that show either a character changing or a main idea being developed. Both of these assignments will be due at the end of the first full week of school. Contact Mr. Dettmer if there are any questions.

AP Studio Art
AP Studio Art Information & Recommended Summer assignment completion

The AP Art program is a very rewarding, albeit vigorous one, in that you will be asked to complete a top-quality piece of art every 5-
10 school days. For every 2 hours spent in class, it is expected that you spend at least 1 hour working outside of class. It will not be
uncommon for you to spend 10-20 hours on each project. With this in mind, it is imperative that you come into the fall school year
with artwork produced over the summer; that can be used in your portfolio come next May. The more work you put in this summer,
the less of burden your work load will be in March, April and May; as we generally do not have enough time to fully complete 20
GOOD/EXCELLENT portfolio quality works of art prior to your portfolio being do the first week of May. In addition, it is very
beneficial for each student should come into the school year with a somewhat clear idea that they would like to take with their
concentration. Please see the example linked above.
